March 2009

A busy month. We had a great visit from Grandma Susan and Joey. Unfortunately, Joe got sick and never did see much of Antigua. Susan got to enjoy a beautiful hotel and managed to see a little bit of the old city. By the end of the week, Joe was feeling better and we all got to enjoy another visit to Lake Atitlan.

Haviland immediately started another class for her Master's program. Luckily this one was actually interesting. Still, it is a stressful two weeks and busy for us all. It did not help that Sam got his first Guatemalan cold - 104 degree fever scared us all to death.

Sam finished the month with a great "field day" at school. The whole early childhood section took the day to play games outside. Check out the pictures - it looked like everyone had lots of fun.

The end of the month was also our 7th anniversary. We managed to ditch the kid and have a nice evening together in Antigua -- Thanks Rachel, Jeff, Lexi and Maya for entertaining Sam for us!

Finally, I just thought I would jot down some of the great things about Sam right now. 5 is a great age! :)

“Can I tell you something?”
Hair in a top knot
Fingernail polish
“Experiments” with alka setzer, growing plants any other science related topics
Cooking classes
Loose tooth
Cuddling with “scratchy” blankets and mom and dad
Loving his fish, his parrots and even abby
Crazy imaginative stories of bombs, dynamite, green and red buttons that do fantastic things, inventions of all sorts
Falling down and other accidents – falling off the bike onto his head, falling off the rings at the park on his head, spilling soup on his leg and getting a second degree burn – growing like crazy and unable to stay coordinated
Beginning to read
Able to communicate in Spanish – beginning to translate for his parents
Wants to scuba dive as soon as he turns 10
Can’t wait to turn 10 to start magic school like harry potter
Loves swimming
Movies – road runner and coyote makes him giggle and giggle and he still loves Scooby-doo
Counting by 2’s, 5’s and 10’s

Still a terrible loser at games of any sort
Can catch a ball with one hand
His favorite thing is story time with mom

I think the rainy season is almost here. But until it gets here, we are enjoying the never ending great weather here. It has been perfect for about 5 months now.
